カスタマイズ

It's not really any of my business but I'm getting irritated over the unemployment of my two youngest roommates. Not so much that they don't have jobs, it's that they seem content to stay that way and let their moms pay their rent. Whenever I'm working a less than fun job to put myself through college and pay my own bills I get annoyed with people who just sit on their asses all day making a mess in the apartment.

I get up around 12pm-2pm every day cause I work 3rd shift and don't go to bed around 6am-7am every day. They get up generally later than me cause they sit up all night playing XBox. They waste half a day that could be spent job hunting. Then they start asking if they can have some of my food. I can sympathize with being unemployed, but when you're out of work you bust your ass to look for work. Unemployment is a full time job in of itself.

This just annoys me is all. I don't respect them because of this and I want them to either get jobs or move out. Odds are at least one of them will. Hopefully around the end of December so they can easily be replaced via Craigslist.

On Saturday the 14th at 4AM UTC/GMT we will be upgrading the operating system of our network load balancers to a newer version, one that will allow us to use both CPUs! Nifty, because multiprocessing is nice.

Since we have 2 load balancers, the plan is to upgrade 1 at a time, and there really should be very little impact to our website. Hopefully you won't notice a thing and I'll get to go back to the hotel and watch some wonderful late night infomercials.

We've got a lot of exciting projects coming up for 2010 and we're hoping that we'll be able to deliver them all to you, that you will find it useful/cool/lovely and then you will use the site even more. Behind-the-scenes work like this will give us the capacity to handle the anticipated traffic, so expect a few more maintenance windows especially in the beginning of next year as we've got some neat ideas to improve performance around here! We had the recent 30-45 minute outage yesterday due to one of our logging databases filling up disk space -- not so great design coupled with my human error in handling the initial problem -- and it looks like we're going to finally have some resources to eliminate stuff like that. I can't wait!

As usual, I will be updating status.livejournal.org before and after, just in case you are not able to reach our main website during the work.

Dani had something on her journal where she asks you 5 question. She asked me these. I'll answer them now.

1. Any video games you regret wasting your time on?

I can't think of any off hand. There's some that sucked but I don't really regret them. I suppose Smash Brothers didn't do me much good in the end though.

2. If you could obliterate any literary work from the world, what would it be and why? And no, Twilight is too easy and doesn't count- it isn't a literary work anyway.

Black Beauty. I hate this book.

3. What do you think about quiet people? Are they harmless or something to be feared?

Meh they're all right. I wish some people would be quiet more often.

4. Ever had phone/cyber sex?

Yes.

5. There's a duck on your ceiling. What do you do about it?

Signed up for classes today. I decided NOT to take a History course enxt semester for practical reasons. As badass as the WW II class would be I need a Writing Intensive class outside of my department and frankly there just aren't that many offered during the summer. There are however plenty of History classes taught during the summer so that settles that. Also I figure it'd be a really bad idea to do a class where I have to write a bunch of papers during the shorter summer semesters.

Of course I may look at things differently after I go have a nice long chat with some campus folks Thrusday. I may decide not to take summer classes and just take three classes next fall. In which case History is back on the menu again.

Right now however I'm signed up for Elementary Japanese II and The Films of Alfred Hitchcock. I chose the Hitchcock class cause I figured watching movies all semester beats the crap out of reading novels all semester.

Mace this year was awesome. The attendance was a lot better this year. Friday we loaded up Dani's car with a dangerous amount of nerd and rode up to High Point. I didn't win the GM Improv this year but that's ok. Spent as little money as possible but still got mildly broke by the end of it all. I'm going to have to live lean for a little while now.

Dani had fun which is super great cause I finally have a girlfriend I can take to conventions. She ended up going through the Living Dungeon adventure with the Empire Games crew. That amuses me to no end. I bought her a pull apart zombie plushie we named Zombie Buttons.

The rest of the Guildies seemed to have a good time too. A crap ton of work went into arranging everything for the Guild to go but in the end it was worth it. Sama blended in at the convention better than I expected, she seemed to always be gaming.

The only complaint I had this year was it was fuggin cold in the convention area. I mean ice cold freezing. The 2nd floor board room gaming area was fine but the main area was very chilly.

All in all a good convention.

Came home from campus to find a horrible site. Two of my roommates right there on the kitchen table going at it playing Yo-Gi-Oh. Ugh it's like they've contaminated the table with more nerd than it can handle. It's un-hygenic.

So in an effort to keep the damage from spreading the next time I know Josh and Bryant are going to be home alone I'm going to clear off the table and put down a thin layer of clear glue. Hahaha take that bitches.

I dreamed I was in a large theatre, perhaps on campus, and the drama teacher from Kings Mountain High was there. Ms Wells was putting on a play on pirates. Also there were Rick, Cloninger, and Brian. It was dark in the theatre as well all watched the production which was very good. We all watched it seperately however which was telling in a way. We were in the same theatre but not sitting near each other.

This was the culmination of a dream which saw us all get put into prison where I had to fight off a large black man that wanted to rape me. Outside people were trying to get in for some reason.

Earlier in the dream I started a new LARP with all my old friends playing in it. It was awesome and huge and on the top floors of the Denny Building on campus. As each of my friends came in to make character sheets we caught up and shook hands. It seemed like the entire cast of not only my old games but everyone I've ever gamed with were there..except the jerks.

Man I'm just about ready to change my major to American Studies! They got a class on Alfred Hitchcock and another one on the blues. Now for some weird reason they have a class dedicated to Akira which strikes me as odd. Hehehe they got classes on comic books, violent video games, and all kinds of crap that just sounds fun.

I just saw the music video for Cyndi Laupers "Good Enough" or aka "The Goonies Song." It's got Captain Lou Albano in it(may he rest in peace) along with The Iron Sheik, Rowdy Roddy Piper, and Classy Freddy Blaisie(may he rest in peace too.) The last three even dress up like pirates and chase Cyndi around a Goonies like secret cave. The videos so horrible it's great lol. Well Pirate Rowdy Roddie Piper where do you think she went? I don't know Pirate Iron Sheik lol.

When it's too rainy to go to the Rennaisance Festival then the only thing left is to grab your woman and squeeze her as hard as possible. Neither Danielle nor I had much inclination to leave the apartment today so we've just lied around being lazy. We did make our way to Jacksons Java for some ice cream but that was because our ice cream levels at home were dangerously low.

Got clear of some nerd drama. It cleared easier than I thought so I'm happy there. I'd post more but the people who need to know already do and those who really don't need to know generalyl read this journal lol.

Danielle keeps threatening me with bears so I'm buying some bear repellant. The problem is there is no general bear repellant. You have to buy specifically for grizzly bears then for polar bears then for brown bears and even for panda bears which I understand aren't really even bears at all.

Finally I'm so anxious for Mace it makes my eyes sting! Man do I want to get away for a while with Danielle and Sama.

EDIT: If you're reading this, our maintenance is OVER! The problem was not found on our equipment, which means we'll have to work with our ISP to fix this small problem -- which also means another maintenance window in the future -- but at least we have eliminated our side.

Hi everyone, sorry for the late notice but I'm going to have to do some testing on 1 of our 4 internet circuits TONIGHT; Friday night or Saturday morning depending on which time zone you're in.

Most of us shouldn't notice any impact, though there may be some slowness or lag when I switch traffic on to our other ISP circuits and then another hit when I stop the tests. If a page won't load or times out, try hitting refresh 1 or 2 times and it should load then. If it doesn't work at all... trust me, I'll be typing really really really fast to try to undo whatever I just did. Hopefully you'll have some Halloween candy (if you're in the USA and celebrate that kind of thing) nearby to take away the bitterness of a small site outage. :(

Here's the handy-dandy Website That I Always Use to get a feel for when the maintenance will start in your area. Our site traffic historically dips on Friday afternoons until Saturday morning which is why we tend to pick this time for maintenance work.
